Departmental Objectives

After completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • Develop the knowledge of the safety and toxicity of preservatives and additives in food and pharmaceuticals
  • Describe the chemical kinetics for prediction of drug’s stability in Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms
  • Acquire the knowledge of various quality control parameters of different analytical techniques using modern and sophisticated instruments
  • Determine raw materials and pharmaceutical products both qualitatively and quantitatively
  • Design an appropriate synthetic pathway for the development of discovery of new drugs

History of Department

  • The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was established by U Myint Oo, Lecturer and Head of Department, Institute of Pharmacy, Yangon in 1991.
  • U Myint Thein, Rector of University of Pharmacy, Yangon, was Head of Department from 1999 to 2002.
  • In early 2002, Professor Dr Tha Hla Shwe, Rector of University of Medicine (2), became Head of Department.
  • In later 2002, Daw Yi Yi served as Associate Professor and Head of the Department from 2002 to 2010.
  • Then, Dr. Cho Cho Min was appointed as Associate Professor and Head of the Department from 2010 to 2019.
  • Now, Professor Dr. Mar Mar Swe was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department from March, 2019 to present.  
  • There are eleven members of teaching staffs at present.
  • The Department began Master course in 2003 and Ph.D course in 2013.
